Every design project — from brochure design to bridge building — goes through a similar process. The larger and more highly visible the project is, the more its process is formally recognized and treated.

Even the simplest project will go through phases. Imagine this scenario: You hire a painter to paint your front door (initiation). You discuss the color with the painter (planning). The painter buys the paint and paints the door (execution). Members of your homeowners’ association object to the color so you start over (more planning). The painter buys more paint and repaints the door (execution). Your homeowners’ association approves the color and you pay the painter’s bill (closure).
